It took Southside nearly seven minutes to crack the scoreboard Friday night.

Then, a flash, they scored six points in 34 seconds.

But that was about the only highlight in the Mavericks’ 47-33 loss on Senior Night.

Mount Saint Mary senior Mabry Meadors scored 10 points and the Belles’ 1-2-1-1 pressure forced 36 turnovers as Southside’s losing streak reached 25.

“The girls really wanted to win this game, with this being their last home game,” Southside coach Steve Brown said. “We were off to a good start, too, but you just can’t turn the ball over 20 times and expect to win.”

The Mavericks and Belles combined for 11 turnovers and 13 missed field goals in the first seven minutes before MSM, ahead 3-0 on some early free throw shooting, exploded in the final minute of the first quarter.

Southside took a 6-3 lead on Shielo Laranjo’s driving layup.

But the Mavericks managed just one more basket the rest of the half. And the Belles, who rallied for a 7-6 lead after one quarter, closed the half on a 17-0 run.

“Everything was going as planned, and then you dig yourself a hole,” Brown said. “Now you’re in scramble mode trying to get to the line, stop the clock, and try and get back into it. We did a pretty good job of that in the fourth quarter, but we spotted them too much.

“You can’t turn the ball over and expect to win.”

Southside 58, Catholic 43

BOYS — The streak is over.

Southside never trailed in Friday’s 58-43 win over Catholic, the team’s first win since late December.

Taye Gatewood hit seven free throws in the final two minutes to secure the team’s first 6A-Central victory. He finished with a team-high 13 points.

Tyrese Solomon had 12 points and Mykale Franks added 10.


Dalton Thomas and Elijah York added timely 3-pointers, helping the Mavericks keep distance between the Rockets.

Thomas scored all seven of his points in the final quarter.

The Mavericks (5-19, 1-11) travel to Little Rock on Tuesday to play Central.
